April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. In the face of animal shelter overcrowding across the U.S., adopting a new feline, canine or reptilian (etc) family member may seem insignificant. But for the animal adopted AND for your family, this is HUGE. Doing what we can with what we have fuels every movement, salves every wound as we heal ourselves and our planet together.

In the face of social and ecological uncertainties, publishing a first novel may seem insignificant. But it is what I have. Beyond what readers might gain from the story, my commitment with The Scent of Distant Family is to distribute all author proceeds to animal welfare organizations. Socially conscious animal sheltering (with a no-kill goal for sheltered animals) needs all of us to support our fellow travelers, both human and beyond-human, who give us courage and resilience to explore toward a more humane future.

The Scent of Distant Family is a contemporary story about a remote Western landscape in the throes of rapid development, as experienced by a diversity of characters and expressed from their variety of perspectives—a lost dog and a wild horse among them.

An acquisitions editor at Bison Books, herself a shelter volunteer, helped make the case for this story emerging into the world. You, too, can help the story connect with readers wherever you are, and help your favorite animal welfare organizations too, whether they work directly with animals or strive to correct the causes of animal homelessness. The book is due out September 1, 2024, and if you share this post, I would love to connect and highlight unique successes. Please link to your favorite organizations in comments!
